I worry so much more about the people who try to stay in their homes and live with the smell and possible spread of disease because of lack of water for sanitation. Two images I have that I cannot get out of my mind are: First, the sweetest elderly couple in their eighties. I talked to the man and he said he had lived in Ishinomaki for over 70 years. He was sitting there eating hot soup that our group had made and served. I tried to tell him how sorry I was for the loss of his home and city. I told him how I had been in Ishinomaki more than 50 years ago on a ministry trip.
I can never forget seeing him and his wife slowly walk down the filthy, rubble-covered street toward the worst part of the town to their home that was still full of stench. I cry every time I think of it. I wanted to run after them and take them to a clean, safe place. The second image is seeing a young couple standing on a mountain of trash while heavy equipment uncovered an area that I am sure must have been their parents’ or friends’ home. They just clung to each other as the equipment worked on the area. If you could see it, you would understand why not all bodies have yet been uncovered.

When I was in Kobe, helping after the 1995 earthquake, I could imagine how I could help people, because as bad as it was, I could lend a hand to help. In Ishinomaki and Kesennuma, you feel so hopeless because there is so much rubble that if you started to try to help, you would only make larger piles of rubble. I felt so helpless to help, except by patting the men on the back as we gave them food and supplies. Many of them said thank you in English. One lady had taken so many of the things we brought, that she could not carry them to her house. She had five in her family. So we put her treasures in our truck and took her home. I cry even now as I think of these things. The Japanese people are brave, brave people.”

OMS has received reports from their national coworkers and church members of some injuries and structural damage to churches and buildings, but nothing major. One OMS missionary family lives100 miles from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex. Other OMS missionaries serve in Tokyo, which is 150 miles from the epicenter, or even farther south.

One Mission Society has been serving in Japan since 1901 when cofounders, Charles and Lettie Cowman, along with Juji Nakada, a national Japanese Christian, began the Mission in Tokyo. In these 110 years, OMS has added 56 more countries to the list of those in which they serve.

OMS missionaries on the ground are working in close partnership with CRASH (Christian Relief Assistance, Support and Hope), an organization that exists to help with disasters, and with the Japan Holiness Church, a large OMS-related church denomination in Japan, to assist in the relief efforts.

OMS missionary Steve King, from northern Indiana, along with a team from CRASH, recently left for Sendai with a truckload of water and other supplies. Snowy and icy roads made travel difficult, as well as concern for finding fuel, but Steve made it and hopes to return soon.

We are asking people to pray for wisdom regarding radiation issues. OMS is monitoring this closely in regard to future decisions.

One Mission Society has set up a relief fund, #404180 Japan Emergency Relief Fund, to provide physical and spiritual relief for the hurting people of Japan.

Go to the One Mission Society website at www.onemissionsociety.org for more information or to donate to the relief fund. You can also get up-to-date information about Japan and other prayer concerns and testimonies on our OMS Facebook page. If you are on Facebook, just type in OMS in your search bar and then click “like.” You will then receive current OMS information in your Newsfeeds or you can go directly to the OMS page to read them.

One Mission Society (World Headquarters located at 941 Fry Road, Greenwood, Indiana) is an evangelical, interdenominational faith mission. OMS has more than 500 missionaries emphasizing intentional evangelism, training national leaders for ministry and planting churches in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. OMS then joins in partnership with those churches to minister to the rest of the world.
